A Mighty Fortress

San Francisco's legendary mint, the "Granite Lady," provided much more for the city than money. During the Great Earthquake of 1906 and the fire that ensued, the massive stone structure became a beacon of hope to the city's forlorn inhabitants. When the dust settled after the earthquake, broken gas lines spurred hellacious fires, one of which was at the mint itself. Fortunately, her employees and 10 U.S. Coast Artillery soldiers used a hose and buckets to fend off the 200-foot flames. Little did they know their brave actions would ensure the survival of the city. As one of the few buildings remaining, the huge mint used its resources to help get the city back on its feet. Setting up a special deal with local bankers, it agreed to back rebuilding loans in gold coin. This 144-page soft-cover book features fascinating stories, and illustrations of the famed San Francisco Mint. Makes a great gift!
