Numerian, youngest son of Carus, received the title "Caesar" shortly after his father became emperor. In the spring of A.D. 283 Numerian accompanied Carus to Persia and became co-emperor when his father suddenly died. During this campaign, Numerian caught a serious eye disease which left him partially blind and forced him to ride in a litter as the legions returned home. This made it easy for the corrupt Praetorian Prefect to murder him.
