A.D. 271-274 Tetricus I Antoninianus

A.D. 271-274 Tetricus I Bronze Antoninianus

This coin depicts Tetricus I whose rebel emperorship of Gaul from A.D. 270 to 273 was independent of authorities in Rome. Though an able ruler, Tetricus I grew tired of threats to his life, and in A.D. 273, he surrendered his crown and army to the Emperor Aurelian in Rome (reuniting Gaul with the Roman Empire). Treated benevolently, Tetricus I was made governor of the province of Lucania before retiring. He lived to an elderly age and was one of the few emperors to die of natural causes.
