Gold Persian Daric

475-400 B.C. Gold Daric of the Persian Empire

This rare gold Daric, now over 2,330 years old, comes from Lydia, one of the first civilizations ever to strike coinage. The Lydian capital of Sardis was the center of Persian power. Through time, their coinage evolved to show the Great King Darius in a kneeling-running pose. It was Darius who first led the Persians against the Greeks, culminating in the Battle of Marathon, and gave this gold stater its name, Daric.
