| When the famous Roman emperor Hadrian was 60, he adopted a 30-year-old senator named Aelius as his heir. Because of his experience in politics, Aelius would have made a good emperor, but by the time he was adopted by Hadrian, Aelius already had tuberculosis. In A.D. 137, Aelius was sent to the Danube with the military for imperial training. Shortly after returning to Rome, Aelius died on January 1, A.D. 138.
