1881 San Francisco Mint

1881-S Liberty Head $10 Gold

Nearly a million Liberty Head $10 gold pieces (also called eagles) were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1881. These 1881-S eagles circulated throughout the western region of the country, where gold and silver coins saw their greatest use and popularity. During their year of mintage in 1881, Billy the Kid was tracked down by Sheriff Pat Garrett in New Mexico, and the Earp brothers broke up the Clanton gang in a famous shoot-out at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona.
