The 1818 half dollar was struck in 89.24% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, birthplace of America`s coinage, where production of U.S. coins began in 1793. The 1818 Capped Bust half was produced during the presidency of James Monroe, and depicts the profile of Liberty wearing a cap which is inscribed liberty. The eagle on the reverse bears a shield on its breast, and the motto liberty is on a banner above the eagle.
