36 B.C. Marc Antony & Cleopatra Portrait Silver Tetradrachm

When Marc Antony sailed to Egypt in search of funds to invade Parthia, he fell in love with and married Cleopatra. However, Antony’s strained alliance with Octavian (Caesar’s nephew and adopted heir) fell apart when he gave her lands belonging to Rome. Octavian defeated the lovers in the battle of Actium, and soon after adopted the name Augustus. Both Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide. Now, more than 20 centuries later, these famous hand-struck coins are survivors of this tragic tale!
