A.D. 138-161 Antoninus Pius Silver Tetradrachm, Dikaiosyne Reverse

You can now own a well-preserved silver Tetradrachm hand struck in Egypt during the A.D. 138-161 reign of Antoninus Pius – Rome’s 4th Good Emperor – at the height of the Pax Romana (Roman peace). Under this compassionate ruler who promoted the arts and sciences, the empire enjoyed great prosperity as well as very little civil or military conflict. Egypt at the time was considered the personal property of the emperor, and its fertile lands provided most of the grain for the empire.

The obverse depicts Antoninus Pius, while the reverse features a standing or seated Dikaiosyne – goddess of Justice and Righteousness. Believed to be a daughter of Zeus, she holds the scales of justice in one hand, and a cornucopia representing the bounty of honest trade in the other. This is the first time we’ve been able to offer the seldom-seen Dikaiosyne reverses, and supplies are strictly limited. Choose from two attractive grades, and add the mystique of ancient Rome and Egypt to your collection today!
