A.D. 138-161 Antoninus Pius Silver Tetradrachm, Serapis Seated

We were recently fortunate to acquire a small number of well-preserved silver Tetradrachms depicting Antoninus Pius – the compassionate Roman ruler known as the fourth of the Five Good Emperors. Hand struck in Egypt more than 1,800 years ago, these coins from the special purchase all feature the god Serapis on the reverse side. This composite deity was created by the pharaoh Ptolemy I to unify the Egyptian and Greek peoples under his rule.

When Rome gained control of Egypt nearly 300 years later, the Romans kept most of the Egyptian culture and deities in place and intact. Antoninus Pius placed the image of Serapis on the reverse of his coins – to appease the Egyptians and to blend their culture with that of Rome. The fourth “Good Emperor” ruled during the height of the Pax Romana (Roman Peace), when the empire enjoyed a lengthy period free of internal strife or civil war.

Supplies are strictly limited – add this premium-quality Antoninus Pius coin with the Serapis Seated reverse to your collection today!
