Malta’s new coins also reflect a rich national heritage. The €1 and €2 bear the Maltese Cross, symbol of the Knights Hospitaller (Knights of Malta) – who successfully defended Malta from the Ottoman Empire in 1565. And the 10, 20, and 50 Cents show the present Maltese Coat of Arms. The 1, 2, and 5 Cents feature the altar at Mnajdra. Built around 3600 B.C., this temple is the world’s oldest free-standing building.
