Concerned about availability of currency paper in 1944 during WWII, the government sought to extend the life of paper money. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing printed a small quantity of specially marked 1935A Series $1 Silver Certificates on regular paper, and others on experimental paper designed to be more durable. After producing less than 1.2 million of each for circulation, the BEP planned to verify their condition upon redemption.
