Originally based on Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Victory sculpture featured in New York’s General Sherman monument, President Roosevelt requested the olive wreath encircling Liberty’s head be replaced with a feathered headdress. And even though letters between the two men in early 1907 indicated this new design was intended for the cent, that same year it debuted as what would become America’s final $10 Gold Eagle design. Minted from 1907-1932, the series came to an abrupt halt with 1933’s Gold Recall Order – which saw many of Saint-Gaudens’ golden masterpieces lost to the melting pots.
