| 1861 $1000 Montgomery, Alabama Confederate States of America Note |

Description: |
This rare Montgomery issue $1000 note is the highest denomination ever issued by the Confederacy. Originally there were 607 pieces, and now approximately 119 notes are known of this confederate rarity. This example, serial #494, was issued June 24, 1861. The notes were redeemable for one year from their issue date, and accrued interest at a rate of 10 cents per day. A bright, nicely colored example with thin margins, mentioned for accuracy, but having the appearance of a higher grade. This note has been cut cancelled and expertly restored. Though many known examples have restorations, each is still considered rare and desirable. The portraits of John C. Calhoun at left and Andrew Jackson at right are on the note’s face. With bold penned signatures of Alexander B. Clitherall and Edward Elmore.
