King Fuad exalted himself from Sultan to King when Egypt declared its independence from Britain in 1922, and this is one of the first modern Egyptian coins to bear a portrait. Fuad’s son King Farouk would become one of the most famous coin collectors of all time – obtaining an export license to acquire the only “legal to own” 1933 Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece (which sold at auction in 2002 for over $7.5 million)!
