According to legend, Caligula received his nickname from the soldier's half boot (caliga) he wore as a child. His father was the popular general Germanicus and this assured Caligula's acceptance when he became emperor. But the public's rejoicing soon turned to fear because of Caligula's cruel and unpredictable behavior. Eventually Caligula was murdered by the Praetorian Guard.
