Valerius Gratus, prefect (governor) of Judaea struck this coin during Tiberius' reign. Only names of the Roman imperial family appear on the coins of the prefects. The obverse bears Tiberius' name: TIB KAICAP (Tiberius Caesar), surrounded by a wreath. His mother's name, Julia, in Greek IOYAIA (note, first A: is the Greek symbol lambda). A palm branch curving to the right is on the reverse; beneath is the date LE (year 5).
