You can own U.S. 1¢, 2¢ and 3¢ coins minted over 150 years ago during the Civil War! All designed by James B. Longacre, the 18631¢ issue was among the first small-size cents and the obsolete 2¢ and 3¢ pieces were last minted over 125 years ago:
- 1863 Indian Head “White Cent” – used to pay Union troops, this early small-size coin is known as a “white cent” for its pale copper-nickel alloy. Issued the year of the Battle of Gettysburg and Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
- 1864-1865 Two Cent Piece – these short-lived bronze coins addressed a Civil War-era coin shortage caused by hoarding. In 1864, President Lincoln was reelected to a second term and General Sherman led his destructive March to the Sea.
- 1865 Nickel Three Cent Piece – the first U.S. coin struck in nickel, this 1865 issue was minted the year of the final Union victory at Appomattox and Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Nickel 3¢ pieces helped relieve a Civil War coin shortage.
