Recall the reign of Emperor Domitian with this high grade silver Cistaphoric Tetradrachm. Rome prospered under his rule – but Christians were seen as a threat to the state’s religion, and persecuted. The apostle John was even banished to the rocky island of Patmos! While in exile, he wrote the Book of Revelation and devoted chapter 17 to the time of Domitian. John’s writings reminded Christians to remain faithful even in the face of persecution.
Silver coins improved in quality during Domitian’s reign, when he increased both their weight and the purity of their silver. Hand struck over 1,900 years ago and worth three Roman Denarii, this piece contains more than 10 grams of silver.
You’ll enjoy a portrait of Domitian on the obverse, while the reverse bears the Eagle banner carried by Rome’s legions into battle. Most likely minted in Rome and sent to Asia Minor for local use, it can now belong to your collection!
