Gallienus began his rule with his father, Valerian, at the age of 35. When his father was taken captive by the Persians in A.D. 260, he became emperor of Rome. Gibbons describes him as a genius, but with no interest in the military or government. Because of this lack of interest, a series of rebellions broke out. Gallienus tried to stop the Empire from disintegrating, but wasn't strong enough to do it. He was killed by his own soldiers in A.D. 268.
