Emperor Galerius I appointed Licinius as Augustus of the west over Constantine the Great. When Galerius died, Licinius began a successful campaign against Maximinus Daia to become Augustus of the Eastern Empire. Licinius and Constantine ruled jointly for 10 years. Relations between them were always strained and in 324, the final break occurred, resulting in two big battles. Licinius was defeated and initially exiled, but he and his nine-year-old son were soon executed.
