The first U.S. $20 gold pieces (or double eagles) to be struck were the Liberty Head coins of 1849-1907. Designed by James B. Longacre, these $20 Liberty Heads bear an attractive, classic portrait of Liberty on the obverse, with an eagle and shield on the reverse. The motto in god we trust was added above the eagle on the reverse in 1866, amid the religious fervor of the post-Civil War era. Get the historic 1875 $20 gold piece today.
