Nearly 300,000 Liberty Head $5 gold pieces were coined at the San Francisco Mint in 1892 and bear that facility`s coveted "S" mint mark. Many of the finest-quality 19th-century U.S. coins were struck at San Francisco - in particular gold and silver issues - which were apparently given extra care and attention in production. The 1892-S $5 gold coins played important roles in the growing commerce of the western part of the country.
