The 1897 Liberty Head $10 gold pieces were designed by Christian Gobrecht. The coins bear a popular portrait of Liberty on the obverse, with an eagle on the reverse. While the basic design of the coins remained unchanged from 1838 to 1907, the motto "in God we trust" was added to the reverse in 1866 (amid the religious fervor of the post-Civil War era). The Klondike gold rush was underway in 1897 when these coins were being struck.
