As 1862-S Liberty Seated half dollars were being struck on the West Coast at the San Francisco Mint, both sides in the Civil War scored significant victories in the eastern part of the country. Union general Ulysses S. Grant captured Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, while Confederate general Robert E. Lee defeated Union forces at the Battle of Fredericksburg. The 90% silver 1862-S Liberty Seated half dollar is a precious memento of that most historic year.
