Designed by James Longacre, the nickel three-cent piece features Liberty wearing a coronet on the obverse, and the Roman numeral III (the denomination) surrounded by a wreath on the reverse. Now obsolete, this 19th-century coin series was issued for 25 years, from 1865-1889. Today, because of its unusual denomination and classic style, the nickel 3¢ piece makes an interesting addition to any collection.
