Sparkling and lustrous, these 90% gold pieces were struck just before WWI, sealed in Royal Bank of Canada bags and stored in vaults for over 75 years.
After the Klondike gold rush, Canada’s biggest-ever strike occurred in 1909 – the Porcupine gold rush in Ontario! It was ore from that fabled rush that produced these magnificent coins. Among the nation’s first circulating gold pieces, they are also the first to show a symbol of Canada on the reverse – the Arms of Dominion. Their detailed obverses display the portrait of England’s recently crowned King George V.These 1914 gold pieces are still in Mint State condition, because when WWI broke out, production was cut short and the coins remained sealed in bank vaults! In 2012, the Canada gold reserve held 245,000 coins, and a few years ago, 30,000 of the most attractive were madeavailable to the public – all sold out!
