During the Civil War, coinage was hoarded and in short supply. Privately-issued bronze tokens circulated as substitutes for cents. Some are called store cards and display the names and addresses of various businesses, while others are known as patriotic tokens and feature flags, presidents and political slogans. These tokens, which circulated until 1864 when they were banned by Congress, are prized Civil War collectibles. You can own a genuine Civil War bronze token in our colorful, informative Showpak® holder.

In 1865, the final year of the Civil War, nickel 3¢ pieces were introduced to help alleviate the coin shortage and to facilitate the purchase of 3¢ postage stamps. Struck in declining quantities until 1889, nickel 3¢ pieces depict Liberty and feature a large roman numeral III on the reverse. After 1889, millions of 3¢ pieces were returned to the mint for melting, so these coins are elusive today. Though these genuine coins don’t meet industry grading standards, they offer an affordable way to own a historic 3¢ piece.

Short-lived Civil War tokens and nickel 3¢ pieces are in great demand during the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Order these short-lived Civil War-era favorites in 5˝ x 3˝ Showpak holders today!
