When America’s first small-size “golden dollars” depicting Sacagawea were introduced in 2000, it soon became apparent that the coins, with their pure copper core and outer layers of manganese brass, were prone to spotting, discoloration and tarnishing. So the U.S. Mint began trying various treatments to eliminate the problem on subsequent issues. When some 2001-P Sacagawea dollars with a darker color and subdued luster were discovered in original mint bags over a decade ago, numismatic experts determined that the coins were experimentally rinsed or coated to resist tarnishing. The U.S. Mint declined to describe the treatment, or to say whether the coins were mistakenly released.

You can now own one of the finest specimens of the experimental 2001-P Sacagawea dollars, certified by PCGS with the special designation “US Mint Experimental Anti-tarnishing Agent.” Add this unique, low-mintage dollar to your collection today while supplies last!
