For the 100th anniversary of the Buffalo nickel’s debut, I’m offering you two of the most sought-after coins in the series, the very first and last issues – the 1913 Type 1 and the 1938-D Type 2 – two distinct types. One hundred years ago in 1913, a nickel series debuted that broke new ground for coinage artistry. Designed by James Earle Fraser, who grew up on the frontier and was exposed to native tribes, the new nickel captured the essence of the American West with amazingly detailed images. The proud Native American profile was a composite from three Indian models, and the buffalo was based on a resident of New York’s Central Park Zoo.

When introduced, the buffalo stood upon a raised mound inscribed FIVE CENTS (Type 1), but the words wore away quickly. After 3 months, FIVE CENTS was placed in a protective recessed area (Type 2). This modified design was used through the final year of the series in 1938 – when Buffalo nickels were struck only at Denver.

I’ve hand selected each coin in these sets for quality and eye appeal, and you can now own an About Uncirculated 1913 Type 1 with very slight wear, paired with an exceptional 1938-D in PCGS certified Gem MS-66 grade. These “first & last” Buffalo nickels are in great demand during this centennial year – order your 2-coin set in a FREE display case today!
