Cast in bronze over 2,400 years ago, this early wheel money is from the ancient city of Istros, among the first colonies in the Black Sea region and producer of some of the earliest coins. The city, situated on the mouth of the Danube River, flourished by trading wine, oils and fish at its advantageous location.

First issued about the end of the 5th century B.C., these coins show a wheel (solar disk) on one side and the Greek letters ist on the other. The solar disk is one of the oldest and most used symbols in human history. Its circular shape and four spokes represent the sun’s path and the seasons. Plus, the “wheel” shape recalls the sun god Apollo who drove his chariot across the sky each day. Very old, scarce and distinctive, this affordable coin can highlight your collection!
