As the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty approached in the 1980s, this great icon of freedom stood worn and weary. An ambitious grass-roots program was launched to fund repairs, so that the beloved landmark would be fully restored for the 1986 centennial celebration. As part of this effort, the U.S. Mint issued limited-edition 1986 commemorative half dollars.
The extra low-mintage Uncirculated half dollar has a satiny finish, and the gleaming Proof has frosted images and mirrorlike surfaces. The obverses feature the Statue of Liberty and an immigrant ship arriving in New York Harbor. The reverses depict an immigrant family ready for a new life in America.
