The Mercury dime of 1916-1945 is hailed as one of America`s most beautiful and artistically pleasing coins. Interestingly, the coin is actually misnamed. The obverse design depicts Liberty wearing a winged cap (to signify freedom of thought), not the male god Mercury seen wearing a similar winged cap. Because the Mercury reference was so widely adopted, the series is far better known as the Mercury dime than its other name, the Winged Liberty Head dime.
