The introduction of the Mercury dime, Standing Liberty quarter, and Liberty Walking half dollar in 1916 was historic. For the first time, these silver U.S. coins did not bear similar designs. Each motif had to stand on its own merit, and all three were extremely well received. In fact, A. A. Weinman's designs for the dime and half dollar, and Hermon A. MacNeil's design for the quarter, have been acclaimed as true and lasting works of art.
